Description

Introduction by Cliff Barrow

Paul S. Rees, Portrait of a Preacher is an exciting new book by gifted writer Glenn D. Black, former editor of God's Revivalist. Dr. Stephen F. Olford writes, "I doubt if I knew any man who pursued holiness like Paul Rees. He not only learned it, he not only taught it, he not only preached it, he lived it! When you were with Paul Rees there was an awesome sense of God. He was a saint!" The same sentiments are echoed by Cliff Barrow of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association: "Paul Rees believed in holiness of life and character. He preached it and taught it and he lived it! He made you thirsty for a holy life. As we read the pages of this book, may each of us experience again these unmistakable characteristics of his life and legacy and say with the hymn writer of old, "More holiness give me, more striving within." God grant that this might be so in your life and in mine. What greater challenge could there ever be in the 21st century?"

Paul Rees began his preaching ministry at 17 years of age and continued almost until his death at 91 years of age. His ministry was worldwide in its scope. For many years he gave Bible Readings at the famous Keswick Convention in England, and for thirty years he was a speaker at the Japanese Keswick Convention. His list of accomplishments is too large to list here. His saintly life spanned almost the whole of the twentieth century and provides a legacy of holiness and godliness for the twenty-first century.

Glenn D. Black, an ordained minister in the Wesleyan Church, is a graduate of God's Bible School (BRE degree) and Indiana Wesleyan University (MA degree). He has pastored three churches and served as editor of God's Revivalist. Since 1990 he has served as District Superintendent of the Kentucky District of the Wesleyan Church. He is the author of Vital Christian Living and editor of Devotions for a Deeper Life by Oswald Chambers and An Empowered Witness--Sermons and Writings of Paul S. Rees.

My wife, Mabel, gave me this book for my 81st birthday. When we were married on June 26, 1970, in Northern Ireland we went to Portrush to begin our honeymoon. That was Friday! On Sunday we heard that the Portstewart Convention was on and that Dr. Paul Rees was preaching. We went to this meeting and his text was Luke 9:23 : If any man will come after Me, (point 1), let him deny himself, (point 2), take up his cross, (point 3) follow Me (point 4) daily. I have never forgotten that message, and I never heard Paul Rees speak again. In our Sunday School class we were considering Jesus's statement and I thought back to Paul Rees so we googled Paul Rees and found out who he was and a book was written about his life and ministry. The book has been a great blessing to me, and I hope it will be to many others.
