In reading the biographies of God’s choicest saints one enters an atmosphere that can scarcely be matched anywhere except in the Bible itself. The air is fresh and pure, bringing life and refreshing to the spirit. The work of preparing this book for publication has been both a delight and an inspiration, and the sincere hope of the publishers is that those who read the following pages may likewise receive much spiritual benefit.

Our first intention was to abridge the work to a less bulky size. However, upon reflection it was felt that those who desire to read classic reprints of this type usually want the complete work, unabridged, and don’t mind paying a little extra for the privilege. Accordingly, the present volume is complete and unabridged, except that we have omitted several footnotes added by the editor which are irrelevant to modern readers. Nothing by William Carvosso himself has been omitted. Some of the punctuation and occasionally sentence structure have been updated for better readability. In most cases this is nothing more than the breaking up of a very long sentence into two, omitting an “and” or a “but” and perhaps inserting a new word to start the sentence.
In the original edition, the letters were scattered throughout the book and usually appeared in footnotes. These letters have now been separated out and placed in a separate chapter by themselves, so as not to interrupt the narrative.
We count it a privilege to be allowed to make this volume available to modern readers. Our prayer is that those who study the life of William Carvosso may aspire to attain, as he did, to the fulness of the stature of Christ.
