Description

If you've never heard of Robert Annan of Dundee, otherwise known as "the Christian Hero," prepare to be astounded at the amazing grace of God in his life as you turn the pages of this incredible little biography. Its thrilling story will stir you to the depths and almost certainly drive you to your knees with an increased desire to be used for God’s glory. The record of his beginning years reads much like that of John Newton - a life of wandering far from God in the ways of sin and rebellion. At least once he miraculously escaped death through the overruling providence of God. As time passed, he became thoroughly discontented with his sinful life; but he didn't want anything to do with God or Christianity. He thought he could overcome sin and live a morally good life by his own efforts. He soon discovered, however, that he was no match for sin or Satan; and casting himself entirely on God's grace and mercy in Jesus Christ, he was gloriously saved. From the very first day of his conversion, he became a tireless seeker of lost souls. He worked during the day time as a stone mason, but his evenings and weekends were spent preaching in the streets or in homes. Frequently he would spend whole nights in secret prayer, pleading at the throne of grace for lost sinners. As he went to his employment in the early mornings, he would often write Scripture verses on the pavement for others to read as they passed by on their way to work or school. Thus he was instant in season and out of season, using every opportunity to present to men the claims of Jesus Christ and the reality of heaven, hell, and the judgment that awaits every human soul. Read his story and be amazed, remembering that what God did for Robert Annan he can and will do for anyone.

My soul was fired by revelation of the life of Christ Jesus in Robert Annan of whom I had never previously heard until "stumbling" across the title while browsing Kingsley Press offerings. The glory of God in His sovereignty as He saves His own I've never seen more clearly than in the complete, radical, new life in brother Annan immediately upon being raised out of eternal death into eternal life when God the Father drew Robert to God the Son. This little book is profound encouragement.

Can't say enough of the conviction brought to me from reading Robert Annons life after regeneration. I'm convinced that the testimony of his life should spur any reader on to true repentance and not just a said faith. I'm very thankful to our Lord for having read this book.

I loved this book and the story. Christians are commanded to proclaim the gospel to this lost and dying world. This book inspires us each to do what we can to fulfill this Holy Command! This book was a quick read and should be read by anyone who is serious about sharing the gospel.

WOW! What a powerful message and a deep challenge in this book. I had never even heard of this Soldier before; what a shame the REAL heroes are seldom heard of. No Christian library should be without this treasure. I read this to my 10 year old son whom has been born again, but he also was very stirred and I'm so thankful. If this book does not set a new flame in your soul, your wood is wet!
I am saving up and hope to buy one of these for every family in our church for Christmas!
This man is a TRUE HERO

This book was small and I assumed a quick read. I found, however, that it had a lot of "meat" in it. I could read a few pages then "chew" on it. I had never heard of Robert Annan although I had heard of some of his contemporaries, such as Billy Bray. His radical change after he came to Christ really struck me. Such conversion is rare to see. The life Robert Annan lived as a Christian is, sad to say, very rare today. I was convicted a number of times as I read this book as I thought about my life compared to his. He worked hard all day, then spent hours after work trying to reach the lost and win them to Christ. What devotion he had! What love for lost souls! This is truly a message needed today for our watered down Christianity.

Another point of conviction was the hours that Robert spent in prayer. He not only poured himself into ministering to others and helping meet their physical needs, but he also poured himself out in prayer before the Father's throne. We know so little of that type of prayer life today. He spent hours in prayer and often ignored sleep to pray for others. Oh that God would awaken us to become prayer warriors like Robert!

He truly lived in the light of eternity and for the souls of men and women alike. This reprint of a long forgotten biography of Robert Annan is a message needed for our day. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to follow God more closely and be a bright flame for our dark generation. May this book stir the hearts of many to follow in Robert's footsteps to walk closely with God and win many to righteousness!

This is a most unusual biography. It has stirred me in ways few books do these days. After an amazing conversion, Robert Annan was gripped immediately by an intense passion for God and souls. He saw in any lost man or woman a soul in immediate eternal jeopardy, and was driven not only to give them the Gospel but also to seek to open their understanding of Eternity, regardless of how much time and effort he must spend to do it.

Robert Annan’s own perpetual awareness of Eternity and the brevity of human life powerfully convicts the reader to seek the Lord for a vision like his and a renewed passion for rescuing the lost.

I loved reading this book. How God can pursue one who is doing everything he can to slip away from God, yet God in His relentless love keeps pursuing. I would recommend every Christian read this book and see what God will do in the life of one commited to holiness in their life.

One line in the book " Mere professors abound here. They have Christ in one hand and the devil in the other. I cannot call them Christians, they are Satans servants in Christs livery." This is much to think on, am I wheat--feeding hungry souls or am I a tare---doing more for satans kingdom than God's.

Robert was always concerned about others souls above all else in his life. after his relationship with God.

Challenged to let the love of God move us in ourselves as well as more concern about the souls of others being rescued from sin, fleshly, carnal living and brought to the feet of Jesus and Resurrection Life.

This is a powerful, convicting book that I highly recommend. Life story of a man who gave his life over to sin and every vice. then God in His pursuit drew this man to a life of holiness and used him powerfully. This book would make a great gift to those who are just drifting in their Christian life or one who is in blatant rebellion against God to see what God can and will do with a life....
Very good read for life change.

I was a bit skeptical as I had no previous knowledge of Mr. Annan. However, this short book tells the remarkable story of a life devoted to God. It is a quick and easy read and a book I would highly recommend.

The message is one of God's grace and mercy for all men. Do not be concerned abaout the place or era of Mr. Annan's life for the message is truly timeless and very relevant for all living today.

What a refreshing joy I found this little book to be!

I enjoyed the opportunity to review this short but meaty biography. I had not heard of Robert Annan before reading this book but now he is one of my heroes of the faith. I was impressed by the change the Holy Spirit makes in a man's life. Annan began as a very carnal individual who loved to drink and carouse. Upon conversion he became a very bold evangelist. His background reminded me of Hudson Taylor and his sense of charity and relying on prayer to meet needs reminded me of George Mueller. He gave up many things for the Gospel and did not count his own life as important. I would love to read more about Amman.

After repenting from a life of sin in 1860, at the age of 26, Robert Annan worked tirelessly to persuade others to follow Christ. Compelled by the reality of eternity, and as if he somehow knew how short his time on earth would be, Annan devoted every possible moment of his time working among "the least of these," preaching to the poor, the destitute, the drunkards, and the prostitutes in the slums of Dundee, Scotland.

The Christian Hero: A Sketch of the Life of Robert Annan, is truely just that, a sketch of Annan's life. The reader may feel as if he has stumbled upon an antique scrapbook full of first hand praise for Annan, hymns that Annan sang, texts of Annan's sermons, letters he wrote to persuade others to turn from sin and follow Christ, and finally, the eulogy delivered at his funeral. All of these valuable primary sources give the book a rare authenticity and reliability. Robert Annan followed the Great Commission in a way that will inspire the reader to re-examine his own obedience to Jesus' final instructions to make disciples.
